The Latino Equity Fund

The Latino Equity Fund at the Boston Foundation works to achieve greater and more equitable access to economic prosperity and well-being for the Latino community across Massachusetts, aggregating charitable dollars and directing high-impact grants to organizations serving Latino residents statewide. Since 2013 it's granted more than $3.5 million to over 80 organizations; this year the need is especially urgent, as federal cuts strain the safety net Latino families rely on, and LEF is committing $500,000 in FY27 grants to organizations addressing food insecurity, healthcare access, and economic opportunity. On September 10, the Fund celebrates this work at ¡Pa'lante! 2026: Ritmo, Color y Sabor, an immersive evening in Cambridge's Termeer Square honoring Latino leaders Juan Fernando Lopera and Josiane Martinez. Building Career Pathways in High Schools

Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) – Boost Pathways Pilot


BDEA, an in-district alternative high school near Nubian Square, runs a competency-based curriculum where students advance at their own pace. Building on that model, it's planning Boost Pathways — Boston's first career pathways program at an alternative high school, connecting coursework to high-demand industries through dual enrollment and paid work-based learning. TBF is supporting the planning — funding is needed for launch.

City of Boston – Health Experiential Learning Pathways (HELP) Pilot 


Led by the City of Boston's Office of Youth Employment & Opportunity, with Boston Public Schools, Boston Private Industry Council, and Northeastern University, this powerful partnership takes students from a paid internship to a guaranteed college seat or job at high school graduation. TBF funded Year 1; funding is needed for Years 2 and 3 to keep students on that path.

Madison Park High School / Boston Private Industry Council – Student Co-op Program

Madison Park, Boston's only public vocational-technical high school, is working with the PIC to grow its healthcare co-op program and meet rising student demand. Funding is needed to recruit new employer partners so more students can access paid placements. TBF is contributing $50K to help close the gap.

Keeping Kids Healthy, Active, and Supported

Boston Community Pediatrics


BCP serves more than 1,900 children across Eastern Massachusetts, about 70% on Medicaid, and has built family support directly into pediatric care — on-site food access with SNAP/WIC enrollment help, and five full-time Family Partners guiding families through housing and legal resources. Funding is needed to sustain both programs for the next 12 months.
$200,000 needed to sustain the housing and food support programs for the next 12 months

Playworks


Playworks places trained coaches in elementary schools, including in Roxbury, Dorchester, and East Boston, turning recess into a tool for building school culture and social-emotional skills. As funding cuts squeeze school budgets, Playworks launched a 3:1 match opportunity to help schools sustain the program — every dollar unlocks $3 more, covering up to 25% of a school's partnership cost.

The Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center – Capital Campaign


Founded in 1961 as the first indoor nonprofit tennis club built by and for the African American community, Sportsmen's is in the final stretch of a $20 million capital campaign, having already raised the large majority of its goal. Funding is needed to close the remaining gap and finish debt-free, unlocking a fully accessible campus serving over 6,000 youth and adults annually.

Building Toward Fair, Equitable, and Supportive Housing

Racial Wealth Gap Partnership


This TBF-convened 40+ member coalition spanning banking, housing, government, and education is working to close the racial homeownership gap. Raising $3.5 million by January 2027 unlocks an additional $2 million from an anonymous donor — together enabling 150+ families to buy homes and building an estimated $40 million in home equity. TBF has committed $500K.

About TBF's Housing work

MassHousing — Massachusetts Covenants Project


MassHousing, the state's housing finance agency, has provided more than $30 billion since 1966 for affordable homeownership and rental housing. With MIT, it is researching how restrictive covenants have barred people from owning homes by race or religion, shaping today's communities. This research is critical to informing and advancing efforts to remove remaining barriers. Phase 1 (3 counties) is done; funding is needed to expand to 5 more.
 
$185,850 needed for Phase 2 (two years, five counties)

Standing With Immigrant and Newcomer Families

St. Stephen's Youth Programs – Parent Mentor Program

St. Stephen's has run community programs in Boston's South End and Lower Roxbury since 1999. Its Parent Mentor Program pays parents — primarily from immigrant communities — to mentor inside classrooms, creating a real pathway to paid employment, training, and jobs within BPS itself. Funding is needed to expand its reach.
$5k funds a semester of English workforce classes for 20 Parent Mentors; $15k supports a Parent Mentor for a full year; $150k brings the program to a new BPS school

WelcomeNST


Founded after the 2021 Afghan evacuation, WelcomeNST trains volunteers into Neighborhood Support Teams that walk alongside newly arrived immigrant and refugee families, connecting them to legal help and everyday support. Five teams are active in Boston, Mattapan, and Dorchester, with eight more communities waiting to start their own. Funding is needed to train 10 more teams this year.
$75,000 needed to secure and train 15 total support teams across Boston

African Bridge Network – Clinical Readiness and Application Support Program


Founded in 2015, African Bridge Network (ABN) helps internationally trained immigrant physicians navigate credentialing, licensing exams, and job placement — work made more urgent by Massachusetts' healthcare workforce shortage. The state's new Physician Pathway Act has opened a real route to practice, and ABN's Clinical Readiness and Application Support Program will help guide physicians into hospital and health center roles.

In collaboration with civic and community leaders, funders and our community of donors, Meeting the Moment: Supporting Our Immigrant Neighbors is TBF's effort to provide legal protection, rapid relief, and advocacy to help immigrant individuals and families stay safe, housed, fed, and on a path to economic security.

Fueling Small Business and Entrepreneurship

Lawyers for Civil Rights – BizGrow Central


Lawyers for Civil Rights has fought discrimination and championed economic opportunity since 1968. Opening October 19 at 141 Tremont Street, its new BizGrow Central will be Greater Boston's only hub offering under-resourced entrepreneurs free legal support, mentorship, and workspace in one place. Funding is needed for launch and first-year operations.

About TBF's Community Wealth work

The Builder Coalition – TBC Capital Lab


The Builder Coalition (formerly Builders of Color Coalition) works to expand access and diversity in Greater Boston's real estate sector. To date, TBC has helped generate $55 million in new capital vehicles in Massachusetts oriented toward emerging developers. The TBC Capital Lab Pilot aims to catalyze at least $75 million in new or redesigned capital and establish a scalable national model for inclusive real estate capital markets, through a six-month advisory phase led by contracted financial product design experts, followed by two years of implementation support from TBC staff.

Supporting the Bridge to Postsecondary Education & Meaningful Careers

Franklin Cummings Tech (FCT)  – Co-op Program

FCT, long known for training Boston residents for careers in tech and skilled trades, recently moved into a brand-new Nubian Square facility. Its paid co-op program delivers real results — graduates earn $57K on average, up from $36K at entry — and FCT is scaling from 90 to 240 co-op students by 2029. In addition to an impact investment for FCT's new campus, TBF has made a substantive grant to support the co-op program.

Boston Public Schools – Postsecondary Transitions Support Center


BPS is tackling "summer melt" — where students who intend to enroll never show up in the fall — by connecting graduating seniors, including students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students in alternative education, to advising partners before graduation, then following through with financial aid help, enrollment support, and warm handoffs over the summer. With this programming, they also recently launched a Postsecondary Transitions Support Center to serve as a single hub for wraparound and navigational support for students pursuing college, credential programs, and other career pathways.

Advancing Community Leadership and Healing

The Resilient Sisterhood Project



RSP educates women of African descent about reproductive health conditions that disproportionately affect them. Black women die from pregnancy-related causes at nearly 3x the rate of white women — a gap RSP traces to conditions like fibroids being dismissed years earlier, in adolescence. Funding is needed to launch a 36-month provider training pilot addressing this upstream.

Louis D. Brown Peace Institute – Campaign for Peace


The Peace Institute, co-founded in 1994 by Clementina Chéry after the murder of her son Louis, is building a new Center of Healing, Teaching, and Learning in Four Corners, Dorchester, steps from where Louis was killed. They have already raised more than two-thirds of their $25 million campaign goal. A closing window to leverage New Markets Tax Credits means the final $7.5 million is needed within 6 months to complete the Center and capture that opportunity.
