OSDE Haiti Fund

Known to longtime supporters by their nickname Na Rive, OSDE is a grassroots Haitian nonprofit organization that provides food and education to children and families in the Ti Plas Kazo community of Port-au-Prince. When you give to the OSDE Haiti Fund, you make a direct impact by supporting proven programs that bring hope and opportunity to children today, while helping to build lasting change for a brighter future.

Children at food program

The Food Program

Every week, the OSDE kitchen team serves about 5,000 hot, nutritious meals to children and families in Ti Plas Kazo — providing more than seven million meals since the program began in March 2000. For most who are served, this is their only meal of the day. The meals include rice, beans, fresh vegetables, and sometimes a small piece of meat or fish. Food is purchased at the farmers’ market and from local distributors, supporting the Haitian economy.

The Father Jeri School

OSDE's education programs aim to foster the next generation of leaders in Haiti — children who are empowered, thoughtful, proud of their heritage, and ready to work together for positive change. The cornerstone of these efforts is the Father Jeri School, where more than 800 students are enrolled in Pre-K through high school. The curriculum combines high academic standards with teachings of respect, empathy, and civic duty.

A new path forward

Since 2000, OSDE's work has been made possible by a community of caring donors convened and cultivated through the What If Foundation. Now, OSDE (Organisation Sociale pour le Développement Économique) has begun a new partnership with the Haiti Development Institute (HDI) to support the operation of the food program and the Father Jeri School. Formed as an initiative of the Boston Foundation, HDI is a well-respected Haitian nonprofit that empowers community-based organizations in Haiti by providing training, coaching, and grantmaking services.

While the structure supporting OSDE has changed, the programs continue and remain true to the vision and values of celebrated Haitian human rights leader, Father Gerard Jean-Juste. It was Father Jeri’s dream to start the food program and the school, and it was his passionate, courageous leadership that inspired and guided the community leaders who formed OSDE.

OSDE welcomes all donors to support the OSDE Haiti Fund — their longtime friends from the What If Foundation, and new friends who want be part of this transformative work.
