As the news continues to emerge about the true devastation facing the island of Maui and the people of Hawai'i, there are a number of places where donors can help support relief and recovery efforts.
As a community foundation, we know the critical role that the Hawai'i Community Foundation can play in supporting nonprofit organizations at the heart of the relief efforts. The Hawai'i Community Foundation has established the Maui Strong Fund to provide financial resources that can be deployed quickly, with a focus on rapid response and recovery on Maui.
HCF is working in close collaboration with state and county leaders, nonprofit organizations, and community members to get an understanding of the quickly evolving priorities.
In addition, there are a number of other local and national organizations that are playing critical roles in the recovery efforts. Among them:
The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement has partnered with Alakaʻina Foundation Family of Companies and Kākoʻo Haleakalā to support those affected by the wildfires.
Maui United Way and Aloha United Way are focused on providing direct relief to families and nonprofits affected by the fires.
Maui Food Bank is providing food to families impacted and displaced by the fires.
American Red Cross of Hawaii is providing emergency shelter for people affected by the fires.
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy has also started a Hawai'i Wildfires Recovery Fund that supports equitable recovery for wildfire-affected families and communities.
The Maui Community Power Recovery Fund will support long-term recovery, community organizing, and political power-building efforts to help Maui recover from the fires over the long term.
The Maui Humane Society is raising funds to support their work after the fires, including the treatment of injured animals and pets, purchase of needed pet supplies, care for displaced animals and efforts to reconnect animals separated from their families by the fires with their owners.
We will continue to add to this list over time – Boston Foundation donor-advised fund holders with questions should reach out to our Donor Services team at donorservices@tbf.org or 617-338-2213. We’ll be happy to work with you to find organizations that match your giving goals.
