The Boston Foundation announces $1 million in accelerated Open Door Grants to Greater Boston organizations
Boston – Recognizing the critical immediate needs of the nonprofit sector, The Boston Foundation today announced that it had awarded $1 million in grants to Greater Boston nonprofits through the Open Door Grants program. Grants usually are awarded in conjunction with the Foundation’s fourth-quarter Board of Directors meeting, but with the coronavirus pandemic increasing financial pressures on nonprofits, grants were approved in a special online vote last week.
In addition to expediting grants, the Foundation also converted all 49 Open Door grants this quarter to general operating support, giving grantees the greatest possible flexibility in how to use the resources.
“We know from the application process that the Open Door Grants applicants have universally high standards for the quality of their work, said Paul S. Grogan, President and CEO of the Boston Foundation. “By making all of these grants general operating support, we are giving the grantees the faith and latitude they have earned to make spending decisions that serve their operations and their communities best.”
Grants for this cycle were reviewed by a cross-departmental team of Boston Foundation staff. In addition, the cycle included grants reviewed by members of the two most recent cohorts of the Boston Neighborhood Fellows program, whose lived experience and understanding of the issues facing organizations and individuals provided invaluable insights.
“The Boston Neighborhood Fellows bring a level of proximity to the work going on in organizations and neighborhoods around Greater Boston that can’t be duplicated by any application document,” said Orlando Watkins, Vice President for Programs at the Boston Foundation. “We hope the success of this process – which was planned even before the COVID-19 crisis hit – will be a guiding model for other grantmaking from the Foundation moving forward.”
In this cycle, the Foundation has awarded $1 million to 49 organizations.
Grantees and the amounts of their grants are listed below. Open Door grantees can apply for up to $50,000 in funding. Grants may be renewed for up to two consecutive years.
ACHIEVE (Dedham): $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support grant to ACHIEVE, a nonprofit organization that runs full service, summer and school year academic, social/emotional enrichment program serving under-resourced Boston Public middle school students.
Boston Arts Academy (Boston): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Boston Arts Academy, Boston’s only public high school for the visual and performing arts.
Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (Boston): $30,000 - A one-year, $30,000 general operating support grant to Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, a nonprofit organization that provides and assures access to the highest quality health care for all homeless individuals and families in the greater Boston area.
Boston Home Inc. (Dorchester): $30,000 - A one-year, $30,000 general operating support grant to Boston Home, a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide exceptional clinical care, compassion, and innovative programs to adults with disabilities due to progressive and advanced neurological disorders.
Boston Project Ministries, Inc. (Dorchester): $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support grant to Boston Project Ministries, a faith-based neighborhood development organization that equips neighbors, volunteers, and churches to build strong communities characterized by peace, wholeness, harmony, and justice.
Boston’s Higher Ground (Roxbury): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Boston’s Higher Ground, a catalyst for collective action that works with residents and partners to improve outcomes in education and to promote the health and well-being of children and families in Roxbury, Dorchester, and surrounding neighborhoods.
Boys and Girls Club of Stoneham (Stoneham): $15,000 - A one-year, $15,000 general operating support grant to the Boys and Girls Club of Stoneham, a nonprofit organization that works to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston: $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support grant for work with police-involved youth and their families to Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, a nonprofit organization that looks to build leadership for tomorrow by sustaining communities today, by providing young people access to physically and emotionally safe environments, quality experiences, and enriching opportunities.
Bryce’s Journey, Inc. (Boston): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Bryce’s Journey, a nonprofit organization that provides free or low-cost support to minority and lower-income, inner-city Boston families with high-functioning children who are living with ASD and/or ADHD.
BUILD (Boston): $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support grant to BUILD, a nonprofit organization that uses entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth from under-resourced communities and propel them to high school, college, and career success.
Cambridge Camping Association, Inc. (Cambridge): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Cambridge Camping Association, a nonprofit organization that provides meaningful experiences to under-resourced, urban youth in supportive and inclusive summer camp and school year communities through enriching and inspiring programs.
Caribbean Integration Community Development (Boston): $20,000: - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Caribbean Integration Community Development, a housing and community development organization that creates and maintains affordable housing in areas of Boston where large numbers of people of Caribbean descent reside.

(Boston): $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support grant to Center for Teen Empowerment, a nonprofit organization that helps low-income, urban youth hone their understanding of the social problems they face and use their talents and skills to create change in their own lives and in their communities.
Central Square Theater (Cambridge): $25,000 - A one-year, $25,000 general operating support grant to Central Square Theater, a nonprofit organization which is home to The Nora and Underground Railway Theater (URT), with a shared vision of “Artists & Audiences Creating Theater Vital to Their Communities.”
Charles River Conservancy, Inc. (Cambridge): $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support grant to Charles River Conservancy, a community collaborator and coalition builder that advocates for the protection and enhancement of landscape, structures, pathways and amenities of the Charles River Basin.
Chinese Culture Connection, Inc. (Malden): $15,000 - A one-year, $15,000 general operating support grant to Chinese Culture Connection, a nonprofit organization that specializes in offering educational programs for adults and youth that expand awareness of Chinese culture.

First Teacher (Roxbury): $25,000 - A one-year, $25,000 general operating support grant to First Teacher, a parent-led school-readiness movement in Roxbury and Dorchester who believes supported, connected, knowledgeable parents/caregivers are the answer to kindergarten preparedness.
Food Link Inc. (Arlington): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Food Link, a community organization that rescues fresh food, alleviates hunger and contributes to environmental sustainability.
Found in Translation (Dorchester): $25,000 - A one-year, $25,000 general operating support grant to Found in Translation, a Boston-based nonprofit with a two-fold mission: To give low-income bilingual women the opportunity to achieve economic security through the use of their language skills, and to reduce racial, ethnic, and linguistic disparities in health care by unleashing bilingual talent into the workforce.
Hamilton-Garrett Music and Arts Academy (Roxbury): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Hamilton-Garrett Music and Arts Academy, fiscally sponsored by the Historic Charles Street AME Church, and is a full-scale after-school youth music program dedicated to passing on the rich legacy of Black cultural music to the next generation of artists.
Hands to Heart Center - Yoga for the People (Jamaica Plain): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Hands to Heart Center - Yoga for the People, a nonprofit yoga service organization, serving Boston’s most vulnerable communities, including students in high-poverty schools, homeless men, women and children, women living in domestic violence shelters, children with special needs, adults in treatment for substance abuse disorder, veterans, migrant communities, and people who are incarcerated.

(East Boston): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant for environmental work to the Neighborhood of Affordable Housing, a community development corporation, promotes equity, community cohesion, environmental justice, and economic resiliency.
North Shore Community Development Coalition (Salem): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to North Shore Community Development Coalition, a community development coalition that uses a community-focused development model to invest resources into low-income or distressed neighborhoods on the North Shore to improve the quality of life for residents.
North Shore Workers Community Fund Inc. (dba New Lynn Coalition) (Lynn): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to North Shore Workers Community Fund, a nonprofit organization that organizes all sectors of working-class people in our region into a unified, permanent, political and economic force that is union and non-union, and transcends racial, linguistic, ethnic, citizenship, and gender boundaries.

(Chelsea): $30,000 - A one-year, $30,000 general operating support grant for work with young mothers to ROCA, a relentless force in disrupting incarceration and poverty by engaging the young adults, police, and systems at the center of urban violence in relationships to address trauma, find hope, and drive change.
Samaritans, Inc. (Boston): $20,000 - A one-year, $20,000 general operating support grant to Samaritans, a nonprofit organization that reduces the incidence of suicide by alleviating despair, isolation, distress and suicidal feelings among individuals in our community, 24 hours a day; to educate the public about suicide prevention; and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide.
TheatreZone, Inc. (dba Apollinaire Theatre Company) (Chelsea): $28,000 - A one-year, $28,000 general operating support grant to Apollinaire Theatre Company, a nonprofit organization that brings new voices into the Boston theatre scene.
Tufts University/Center for State Policy Analysis (Medford): $10,000 - A one-year, $10,000 general operating support to the Center of State Policy Analysis at Tufts University, a political research center that will undertake detailed analysis of live legislative issues and statewide ballot initiatives in Massachusetts in order to give lawmakers the information they need to improve their legislation, help citizens understand the stakes of new laws and ballot initiatives, and allow advocates to gauge the trade-offs in proposed regulations.
United South End Settlements (Boston): $32,000 - A one-year, $32,000 general operating support grant for family mobility work to United South End Settlements, a nonprofit organization that harnesses the power of our diverse community to disrupt the cycle of poverty for children and their families.
Urban Farming Institute (Mattapan): $30,000 - A one-year, $30,000 general operating support grant for work with older adults to Urban Farming Institute, a nonprofit organization that develops and promotes urban farming to engage individuals in growing food and building a healthy community.
