The BASE combines baseball and softball training and competition with academic and career resources to empower student athletes to achieve their full potential on and off the field. Founded in 2013 by Robert Lewis Jr., The BASE engages and supports a growing network of youth baseball coaches, and has built strong relationships with diverse leaders and institutions committed to changing minds, lives and the status quo—from the public, private and nonprofit sectors, in higher education, from the community and beyond. Since its inception, BASE Boston teams have traveled to Chicago each summer to play local teams on the West Side and South Side, and local Chicago teams have traveled to Boston to play in the annual Boston Urban Baseball Classic. Building on strong and committed relationships forged over years of partnership, The BASE is launching The BASE Chicago this year. The Boston Foundation gave a critical early grant of $230,000 to help launch The BASE and since then has made grants of close to $850,000.
The Boston Foundation has been “There at the Beginning” with critical early funding for more than 100 great ideas and new nonprofits.
