On June 24, 2026, northern Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude just 39 seconds apart, causing catastrophic damage across La Guaira, Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Falcón, and Yaracuy, collapsing residential towers, hospitals, schools, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Thousands were killed or injured, tens of thousands more have been displaced, and the United Nations estimates the disaster has caused approximately $6.7 billion in damage, nearly 6 percent of Venezuela's annual GDP.

The Latino Equity Fund at The Boston Foundation is joining local organizations and partners on the ground in Venezuela to raise emergency funding to support trusted organizations providing:

  • Search and rescue
  • Emergency medical care
  • Food and clean water
  • Temporary shelter
  • Essential supplies for displaced families

Beyond the initial needs, the Fund partners will work to build a regional philanthropic effort to support long term recovery, including:

  • Housing reconstruction
  • Community infrastructure
  • Health and mental health services
  • Schools and community organizations
  • Economic recovery for affected families

“Just weeks ago, I was in Caracas with my family. Today, like millions of Venezuelans living abroad, I am watching a country I love endure unimaginable loss. The Massachusetts United for Venezuela Fund was created because distance should never prevent us from helping. Together, we can deliver urgently needed relief while letting the people of Venezuela know they are not alone."

Venezuelans in New England

More than 25,000 Venezuelans live in New England, with an estimated 12,000 living in Massachusetts, primarily in Greater Boston, Framingham, Chelsea, Everett, Lynn and Revere.

The Venezuelan population has been one of the fastest-growing Latino communities in New England over the past five years, driven largely by humanitarian migration.
