New Space to Thrive

Modern. Welcoming. Efficient. Beautiful. These words have all been used to describe the Boston Foundation’s new space—both physical and virtual.

In June, all the occupants of the 10th floor at 75 Arlington Street took a deep breath, sorted, winnowed, packed up and moved to the third floor, where the entire space had been carefully redesigned to suit the Foundation’s unique needs and functions.

More than just fresh paint and new carpeting, the new space was designed to make forums and other gatherings more comfortable and effective. The new Edgerley Center for Civic Leadership, made possible by a generous gift from Sandra and Paul Edgerley, offers more space for forums and built-in audio-visual technology, among other improvements. The Foundation continues to offer free access to our meeting spaces for area nonprofits’ meetings, retreats or presentations, on a reservation basis. 

The nonpublic work areas were creatively tweaked to accommodate a growing staff, and to allow staff from satellite offices to come into the fold.

Hand in hand with the redesign of our office environment, a renovation of the Foundation’s online environment was in process behind the scenes. The new website, still at tbf.org, was launched on Halloween. All treat, no tricks! It was fortuitous to update physical and online space at the same time, and make the two “workplaces” intentionally complementary.

Like the new physical space, the new website is more than just a freshened surface. It offers pathways for visitors with specific interests. “The new website is a portal into our work, and was designed to adapt to different-sized devices and the different goals of visitors,” said Boston Foundation Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs Keith Mahoney. “The technological advances allow for more robust and interactive communications with our donors and community partners.”
