Position Budgeted: $100,000.00 to $115,000.00

Position Summary:

The Equality Fund at the Boston Foundation was established in 2012 as a non-partisan permanent resource to develop, strengthen and support the LGBTQ+ community in Massachusetts, to galvanize and unite the diverse voices within this community, and to build a lasting endowment for LQBTQ+ issues over time. The Fund seeks to advocate for equal access to all aspects of our society and collaborate with  communities of color and oppressed communities to build collective strengths to overcome injustice.

The Director of the Equality Fund shapes, communicates, and executes on the Fund’s vision and goals, and increases resources to benefit the community. This position is responsible for overseeing and implementing all programming, fundraising, and other activities of the Fund in coordination with its Steering Committee, Advisory Committee and the Senior Management Team of the Boston Foundation. 

Essential Functions:

  • Manage on-going operations and deliverables of the Equality Fund;
  • Define, update, and implement the strategic goals, objectives and success criteria for the Fund in collaboration with Equality Fund leadership, including growth, convening, and program incubation with development, implementation, and support;
  • Advocate and facilitate dialogues and interactions across the many intersectional spaces that make up the LGBTQ+ community, so BIPOC members and other key racial justice constituencies can be fully accepted and represented in multiple spaces. Collaborate with the Latino Equity Fund, the Asian Community Fund, the New Commonwealth Fund and King Boston in this work;
  • Explore emerging issues and how they are effecting the LGBTQ+ community, including “don’t say gay”, transphobia and particular challenges for LGBTQ+ refugees and immigrants;
  • Foster the Fund’s role as a community connector through coalition building, organizing, and relationship management with key regional community stakeholders;
  • Develop a civic leadership platform for convening, advocating and supporting the LGBTQ+ community in a visible and collaborative way;
  • Stewarding the volunteer Steering and Advisory Committees, facilitating meetings and communication between members, and developing governance protocols;
  • Support fund development in partnership with the TBF Development & Donor Services team and Equality Fund leadership, including fundraising from individual and institutional donors by making asks for outright and planned gifts, identifying and pursuing new leads, monitoring donations, and fielding inquiries and acknowledge grants;
  • Working with Communications and Marketing partners and identified spokespeople to develop and advance communications and marketing plans, and seek out opportunities to partner with the Boston Foundation on research, grantmaking and sponsorships; and
  • Delivering periodic reports and benchmarking for the Fund and its impact.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Individuals assigned to this position may perform other duties as assigned by the Equality Fund Steering Committee from time to time.

Qualifications

Preparation, Knowledge, Previous Experience:

  • College degree or equivalent additional experience in the areas below; 
  • 8+ years of business development, program development, or management experience;
  • Demonstrated experience leading or working actively in a collaborative environment with diverse groups;
  • A proven track record in designing programming which actively engages stakeholders;
  • Experience managing diverse committee and stakeholder groups;
  • Familiarity with fund development and grants management; and
  • Passion for the goals of the Fund and knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community in Massachusetts.

  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills with a strong desire to collaborate and network with leaders across multiple sectors with connections to the LGBTQ+ community;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively with flexibility for changing priorities and tight deadlines within a dynamic start-up environment;
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail and accuracy in organizing and prioritizing the Equality Fund’s work plan;
  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly, verbally and in writing; 
  • Professional, respectful, and mature interpersonal work style; ability to constructively give and receive feedback;
  • Willingness and ability to work outside the regularly scheduled work day as needed;
  • Willingness and ability to handle confidential information;
  • Be a team player and have a sense of humor; 
  • Knowledge of non-profit administration;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products - especially Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point; Salesforce or other database experience strongly preferred; and
  • Excellent data analysis, management, and reporting skills.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time; 
  • Ability to travel, as required;
  • Ability to use phone and/or video communications effectively and efficiently; and
  • Ability to use a keyboard and electronic screen for extended periods of time.
