Issue to be Addressed:
Boys aged 9-15 are the most vulnerable to a myriad of social, physical, mental, and spiritual issues. Negative impacts and pressures in the community target youth of this age to make decisions that often lead to life altering consequences. Research has proven that lack of confidence makes these young people seeks special attention through negative behaviors such as: Bullying, being bullied, truancy and dropouts, violent and reckless behavior, weapon offenses, lack of respect for authority, etc. This problem is especially on the rise within Brown and Black youth in the communities of Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan.

Project Proposed:
KAIMOKU!  will provide Karate, and Educational support targeting youth in the pre-teen/teen age group.  Using the focused discipline of Shito-Ryu Karate, members will learn the “Kunshi no Ken” or the Noble Discipline which means to concentrate oneself to become a well-rounded, respectful individual.  Our main focus is to build self-confidence and respect for self and others while learning to suppress the “Heijutsu no Sanbyo” or three weaknesses which are Giryo (Doubt),  Ketai (Negligence), and Manshin (Egotism). KAIMOKU!  will collaborate with the BCYF Holland Community Center which will provide valuable space three times a week for programming.  Youth residents and BCYF Holland members aged 9-15 will be encouraged to join the program.

Role of Collaboration:
Debendra Amatya is the lead Instructor and collaborator for KAIMOKU!.  He has been in the field for more than 25 years, actively instructing karate since 1993 and has extensive experience in youth and sports development in the community. His accolades are as follows:
Instructor and coach in multiple martial arts academies in the USA.  Debendra is a licensed Referee and Judge of National Karate Federation of USA; World Martial Arts Federation, USA & Mass America Sport Martial Arts League; Coached USA Open Karate Championship 2012; Asst. Coordinator for Nepal Karate Federation to USA; Education: Master of Management, Cambridge College, Massachusetts, USA

The BCYF Holland Community Center’s mission is to provide opportunities for youth and families to explore educational, recreational, cultural and life skills experiences within a safe positive and enthusiastic environment. They provide services to over 100 families daily through programs such as After school Enrichment, Swim Lessons, Technology Instruction, Basketball Clinics, and many other special events and community meetings. Holland will play the role of physical host, providing space for KAIMOKU! as well as a recruiting source via usage of their extensive participant and contact list.

Impact:
Our plan is to expand the existing Karate and Educational program to be accessible to all youth in this community. This Collaborate Boston program is a perfect match to our efforts to prepare and mentor a future generation of strong, responsible young men, emphasizing self esteem and self defense.  This prize would assist us in providing equipment, uniforms, rental space as well as overhead for the KAIMOKU! program as well as giving us a base for our operations in a successful, vibrant Community Center.

Other information:
Shito-Ryu Karate is used for building a healthy and confident person.  In addition to Karate, KAIMOKU! will provide support in their academic and educational needs as well.
In keeping in line with the “Kunshi no Ken” and bringing forth a well-rounded, respectful individual, we believe education is a vital step toward this goal.
