Philanthropy

As one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the country—and the first community foundation to make a grant—the Boston Foundation is committed to examining the impact of philanthropy—and the challenges faced by foundations and charitable individuals in the 21st century--in our city and state.

A central part of the Boston Foundation’s mission is to help individuals, families and businesses engage in effective and fulfilling philanthropy.  The Foundation encourages planned and legacy gifts to the Permanent Fund for Boston, which supports all of its grantmaking in Greater Boston, and works closely with those who have established Donor Advised Funds at the Foundation to make their giving meaningful and effective. Additionally, the Philanthropic Initiative (TPI), a business unit of the Boston Foundation, provides customized consulting services and programs for donors interested in deep engagement opportunities. The Foundation also sponsors and hosts the Giving Common, which is an innovative, web-based resource that provides current information about nonprofits and makes giving in Massachusetts quick and easy.
