Food and Fuel Fund

The Food and Fuel Fund supports nonprofit organizations that work to meet basic and emergency needs over the winter months, a time of year when demand increases while costs rise, and families are under increased pressure to stretch limited dollars.  Through one-time, unsolicited grants, the Fund supports organizations that implement immediate, short-term and long-term interventions to prevent or diminish needs in areas such as food, shelter and heating.  It also leverages these dollars through its work with MassNeeds, a coordinated effort with some 40 other foundations to address these needs throughout Massachusetts in winter.

The Food and Fuel Fund was launched in 2008 following the downturn in the economy and news reports of dramatic increases in the price of food and fuel for Massachusetts residents at a time of shrinking resources.  Through a combination of discretionary grantmaking resources and generous donor contributions, the Fund was able to disburse approximately $750,000 that winter to a range of organizations serving individuals and families particularly vulnerable to the rising fuel and food costs.

Because the need for assistance is still great, the Boston Foundation is continuing its commitment to relieving the pressure on agencies serving our most vulnerable neighbors during the winter months.
