The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's 2004 Index asserts that while innovation indicators are strong, creation of new high tech jobs in the state is lagging. The report highlights a need for increased investment in higher education. In recent years, public university enrollments have remained flat, and in community colleges they have declined.
Key report findings include:
· A total of $4.6 billion in federally-supported research and development in Massachusetts through 2002
· 8.3 percent growth in patents awarded to Massachusetts inventors in 2003
· A 3.2 percent fall in employment in the nine key industries clusters the index tracks in 2003
· A 3.2 percent fall in median household income in Massachusetts in 2003
