The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies Reports on the Consequences of “Uninsurance,” Proposing Guidelines for Universal Coverage

The report Insuring America’s Health: Principles and Recommendations by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies explores the consequences of the lack of health insurance for 43 million Americans, noting that the US is the only wealthy industrialized nation without an insurance plan covering all citizens. The IOM proposes basic guidelines for evaluating and developing a universal, affordable, high quality and sustainable healthcare plan and recommends coverage for all Americans by 2010.
