The Giving Common

The Giving Common is an innovative, web-based technology platform designed to provide comprehensive and current information about nonprofit organizations across the Commonwealth—and to make online charitable giving easy and quick.  It was developed by the Boston Foundation in collaboration with our area’s nonprofits and with other funders and launched on May 30th of 2012 at a special event at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.  More than 300 nonprofits were represented on the site at the launch—and hundreds more are developing profiles.

The Giving Common is powered by GuideStar, the nation’s leading nonprofit research organization, and invites organizations to complete a detailed profile that includes mission statements, program offerings, governance and management information and indicators of impact.  The information is integrated into other sites that use Guidestar, saving nonprofits time and effort updating profiles—and making it possible for institutional funders to use the site for their grantmaking.  It is increasing informed giving in all of these areas by collecting detailed, up-to-date information from the nonprofits themselves, ranging from general information to specifics about governance, management, finances and more.  In turn, it is making the information available to the public in clear and accessible ways.
