The Permanent Fund for Boston is a virtual endowment for the people of Greater Boston—providing the flexible, unrestricted dollars that give the Boston Foundation the resources it needs to address the most urgent concerns of the day.  The Foundation’s competitive grantmaking program, which awards millions of dollars in grants to Greater Boston’s nonprofit organizations every year, relies on this pool of funds to support programs that meet a broad range of community needs.

Historically, the Permanent Fund for Boston has received significant support through generous bequests, with the first major contribution of $4 million coming from James Longley in 1917.  In 1959, Albert Stone left close to $20 million, a staggering sum at the time, which more than doubled the Foundation’s assets.  Through the years, hundreds of people have added to this fund, knowing that its resources would be used wisely where they will do the most good.

A number of current donors to the Boston Foundation, all members of the Rogerson Legacy Society, have arranged to leave all or a portion of their legacies to the Permanent Fund for Boston.  A special recognition wall in the Foundation’s reception area pays tribute to members of this important society.
