Forums

Through its Understanding Boston series, the Boston Foundation holds numerous public forums throughout the year.  Most of these gatherings are held at the Boston Foundation’s offices and are developed in close partnership with other nonprofit organizations, universities and think tanks.  Many of these forums are recorded, and reports, case studies, audio clips and speaker presentation are available through the chronological listings below.

Healthy People in a Healthy Economy: A Blueprint for Action in Massachusetts
Healthy People in a Healthy Economy: A Blueprint for Action in Massachusetts is the second report researched and written by the New England Healthcare Institute for the Boston Foundation.  The Boston Foundation and our partners at NEHI believe that the time has come to launch a comprehensive effort to address the rise in health care costs and the rising tide of preventable chronic disease through a campaign to improve overall health and fitness, building on the initial success of the Commonwealth‘s Mass in Motion campaign.  This Blueprint prescribes a number of reforms to address these issues.

StreetSafe Boston is Launched
On December 4th, a front-page story in The Boston Globe announced a new youth anti-violence initiative—an unprecedented partnership of the Boston Foundation, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the Boston Police Department, other public and private civic leaders and organizations that serve Boston’s neighborhoods.Called StreetSafe Boston, the ambitious initiative was formally launched on December 15th at the Sportsmen’s Tennis Club in Dorchester.

Boston’s Education Pipeline: A Report Card
Paul S. Grogan, President and CEO of the Boston Foundation, opened a major forum on December 11th attended by hundreds of educators, civic leaders, teachers and parents. The occasion was the release of the much-anticipated Boston’s Education Pipeline: A Report Card, the first comprehensive view of the entire arc of Boston’s system of educational opportunities and outcomes from early childhood development to PreK-12 schooling through college or post-secondary training and into the workforce.

From Paradigm to Paradox: Understanding Greater Boston's New Housing Market
On October 28th, at a forum attended by more than 100 people, theBoston Foundation released its sixth annual survey of the regional housing market, delivering sobering news to both homebuyers and homeowners. This year’sGreater Boston “Housing Report Card” reflects a population that is continuing to age and a growing economic misfit between the cost of living and income. The forum was co-sponsored by Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association.
