Investment Management

Fund for the 21st Century

The Foundation’s primary investment vehicle is the Fund for the 21st Century, a multi-manager portfolio created specifically for the Boston Foundation. Broadly diversified across asset classes, including alternative investments, and across investment styles, the Fund strives to enhance investment returns and sets high performance standards for investment managers.

The investment performance of the Fund for the 21st Century is structured to seek returns in excess of the targeted spending policy, costs and inflation. The Fund, which invests the assets of nearly all charitable funds at the Foundation, is designed to maximize available funds for current grantmaking, while increasing the endowment to benefit future generations.

Socially Responsible Proxy Voting

Access. Equity. Diversity. Fairness. Respect.

These are the core values that guide the Boston Foundation’s work and investment policies. The Boston Foundation was the first major community foundation in the country to actively promote its values by exercising its right to strategic proxy voting for all of its investments. As such, it is an innovative model for other foundations and nonprofit organizations across the country. The Foundation focuses its proxy voting on a number of key issues that are important to our donors and our community, including the environment, diversity and equity, and good corporate governance.
