In response to the tragedies of January 12, 2010, the Board of the Boston Foundation announced the creation of The Haiti Relief and Reconstruction Fund. While focusing on long-term reconstruction efforts, the fund will disperse up to 25% for immediate disaster relief, with all grants guided by a committee of Haitian Americans and experts in international development.
The first $1 million in gifts was generously matched dollar for dollar by the Ansara Family Fund at the Boston Foundation, and we are pleased to announce that we surpassed the challenge grant in less than a month. While we are thrilled to have reached $2 million, this is only a milestone in our efforts, because the needs in Haiti and among Boston area Haitians continue to mount. We hope you will continue to support The Haiti Fund over the next five years so that Haitians can have a voice in rebuilding their lives and their homeland.
How to Give
Contributions can be made in the following ways:
1. Make checks payable to “The Boston Foundation” with The Haiti Fund in the memo line. Checks should be sent to Fund Administration, The Boston Foundation, 75 Arlington Street, Boston, MA 02116.
2. Donate by credit card at the Boston Foundation's secure site. Select Haiti Fund in "Donation Information."
3. Fund advisors can login to Advisor Xpress and recommend a grant to the Boston Foundation with the grant to be used for The Haiti Fund.
Grants
The Haiti Fund will award grants over the next five years to support efforts in the following areas:
- Human rights training and organizing
- Long-term reconstruction (all elements of infrastructure from housing to medical care to education)
- Long-term livelihoods (with emphasis on grassroots approaches including microfinance and food sovereignty)
- Support for the Haitian American community in Boston as it copes with grief and economic impact of the disaster.
View our grants to date totaling $425,540.
We anticipate that the next round of grantmaking will begin this fall. Please email Laura McConaghy if you would like to receive future updates on how to apply for funding.
How to Get Involved
Haitians Building Haiti: Towards Transparent and Accountable Development was a two day conference including a town hall meeting on Friday, March 26th, and an all day gathering at UMass Boston the following day with members of the Haitian Diaspora in the U.S. and Canada, friends of Haiti, representatives of non-governmental organizations and representatives from Haitian civil society organizations. The purpose of this conference was to build a common vision for the reconstruction of Haiti and articulate key principles to move the Haitian state and society forward. These principles were then presented at the UN Donors conference on March 31, 2010. Please click here to read the 5 principles that were developed as a result of this conference.
